I'm really curious.

Since DH has Hermione's full name as Hermione Jean Granger, does that overrule the preceding SIX books that stated her name as Hermione Jane?

JKR, you suck. Did you proofread or what?

Well, that one's obvious.

Was her middle name even mentioned anywhere at all in the previous six books?

I don't think so. It was on JKR's website.

She had said it was Jane at World Book Day back in 2004, after she had written OotP and made Umbridge's middle name the same thing.

I think it always was Jean, but we got it confused with Dolores Jane Umbridge.

...I never associated Umbridge with Hermione.
ew, lol!

And Umbridge came in OoTP, how could we confuse her with that when Hermione was a character from the beginning?

Seriously...it's just depressing. BOOOOO.

Thanks for the input though. I disagree, but yeah, lol.

Ok, I don't think her middle name ever made it into any other book, instead it was on JKR's website mentioned by JKR during the World Book Day chat in 2004.

But I'll take anything from her website that was there pretty early on before the IoD, as the Hermione middle name was, rather than anything from DH or the interviews she's given since then, because she keeps contradicting herself so much that I'm just going "OMG, would you just STOP?!?!?"

And I've actually found some friends here at college who agree with us that canon was over after the seventh book.

I'm pretty sure it was. A few times.

Her middle name was never given in the books, but JKR once said it was Jane. She later changed that to Jean because of "Dolores Jane" Umbridge, and she didn't want the association. So it was one of those things she changed mid-stream, but could, as it was never actually in the texts. That's sometimes the problem with saying things in interviews when one is still in the midst of writing. You can later change your mind. :-)

That's what it says on the Lexicon, as well.

I wish she'd just left it. I still don't feel "Jean" fits her as well as "Jane"... (is it silly that I always associate Jean with Grey, as in Phoenix?? :P)

I feel the same way. I mean, whaddya do spouting off names that later get changed while still in the process of getting out the books? Readers cling to this kind of thing, and to just change a middle name like that when everyone knew it before as JANE is gonna be like - huh? -

Jean does NOT fit Hermione of the previous 6 books, though it's quite fitting for the last book, IMO. Ugh. The contradictions were just too much for me.

Well yes, but she also said on her website that she had considered naming Draco's family Spungen instead of Malfoy. The difference here is just that she changed her mind before the first book was out.

But then I don't take anything she says in interviews as canon. Canon to me is the seven books and nothing more. Even that stupid epilogue if I have to. Everything else she says now or has only voiced in interviews, I take as suggestions and speculations. *shrug* But of course that's just my opinion. I do understand that others might feel differently.

Although to be honest when I first saw it when reading DH I had to stop and think for a moment, but then I decided it was probably just an ordinary printing error and didn't give it any further thought.

Aaaaactually, JKR never stated Hermione's middle name as anything, except in one interview, making it deuterocanonical, imho... (Kind of like the 6 deuterocanonical books in the Catholic Bible... -- doesn't make them any less valid, just some people don't think they count.) JKR doing this just proves she has no idea of what actually floods out of that cesspool of a mouth she's got. She has not. a. clue.

lol, I've never come across 'deuterocanonical' before. Of course there's Deuteronomy but WHOA. lol.

You know what, JKR is STILL. NOT. COOL.

Indeed, Cesspool. *is disgusted*

And BOO to you guys for getting all intellectual in this. Though I'm glad to see you commented Steph ♥

Wordy McWord.

To be honest, I don't read her interviews any more. She's changed her mind like 25706 time the last 10 years (except for what she apparently decided on before she ever started writing). Oh, did I mention she thinks she's a character-driven writer? LOLZ

O.o

Who told her that? The Mirror of Erised?

I think she learned that from one of those Patented Daydream Charms, in which she daydreamed about being a character-driven writer :))

I think Hermione Jane Granger was only ever mentioned in interviews. In the first six books, she was just simply Hermione Granger... so Jane isn't canon, as opposed to Jean, which became canon in the seventh book.

Then again, a gagillion other posters before me has already probably said that.

eh, no harm in reiterating that, right?
