Aww, Jonathan's face. Although I was surprised he didn't seem more surprised, but then, I suppose we don't know the severity of his problem. (Some deaf people can hear sound, it just doesn't make sense - at least that's what I gather.)

I have a friend who had the Cochlear procedure done, and he said a week after his surgery and they turned it 'on', he got into his car to drive home and turned on the radio to see what he could hear. He said it sounded more like static to him, but after a few months it all started to make sense.

It's interesting. Though with this baby, Jonathan(?), I'm pretty sure that in the video, when he moves his whole body and sort of sits up straighter in his mom's arms, that's when the device was turned 'on'. He reacted exactly as I would expect. I know for my hearing aid when they turned it on, I jumped, and I was already 21 or 22. I'm pretty sure for him that was about as surprised as he could react, with still being a growing baby.

It was so sweet to see him smile.

I just remember being stunned when I got my hearing aids, and my hearing isn't even in the deaf range - although I also didn't realize how bad my hearing was. I've had to go without them a few times and I don't know how I managed the first fourteen years of my life. Then again, nobody knows what they don't know. I used to always interrupt people but I thought they were interrupting me - when really I was relying on semi-long pauses to decide whether or not they were finished when I couldn't hear what they were saying.

I'm pretty sure for him that was about as surprised as he could react, with still being a growing baby.

I think you're right - he's also just discovered that he can eat food and walk on his legs, so perhaps this felt like one more new thing to him.
