Techie question!!!!!

GUYS. I need a magic wand to FIX MY COMPUTER.

For WEEKS I've been seeing this message 'Your C:(!@#$%) Drive is running VERY low on memory. Click here to delete unnecessary files, remove/uninstall programs you don't use'.

Do I need a new computer? I don't know how to transfer things from the C drive to the data drive without MESSING UP ALL MY PROGRAMS. There's some I don't even use, but... :( I don't know what to do and I'm freaking out because...I have a LOT of important documents on this computer, it was my college computer, it has tons of my school work, papers, etc.

THEN, there's the MUSIC. iTunes has to save this file on the C: drive, whereas I've MOVED all the music files from the C drive to my external harddrive (which I almost killed a few months ago after pushing everything off the lappie when I spilled root beer ALL OVER the right side of the keyboard)...

I'm clumsy, I can't help it.

Help *cries*

I'm also reticent to consider purchasing another laptop because the next computer purchase I want to make is for a Mac. But those dang things are EXPENSIVE. And I want it primarily to be my partner in crime in school (whenever school deigns me worthy enough NOT TO REJECT ME *not bitter*)

Please offer solutions and peanut butter balls. I need some peanut butter to soothe my soul now.

/random, random, is random: also, I NEED A PEANUT BUTTER ICON. lol /random

*sends virtual peanut butter balls* (whatever they are.)

I have no solutions; I'm a Mac girl. :( I hope someone can help you out!

If I could send you some, I WOULD. They're like ...HOMEMADE REESES PEANUT BUTTER CUPS, except WAAAAAY BETTER.

I love sugary, fatty things. lol

I'm trying to ignore my skin color as it slowly turns green from envy!!. love you!! :P

I've had Reese's Peanut Butter Cups! An LJ pal sent them to me for a taste, they were yummeh. :D I'm sure homemade would be even better! (I like sugary fatty things too. Just check out my interests list, it's more like a list of my weaknesses XD)

You'll have your Mac one day! Promise! *loves*

Tips to try:
-Empty your recycling bin
- Open up your "my computer" (if you're running a PC) and see where the drive is. Right click (if you're running a PC) and say properties. Then Click "Disk Cleanup" button and let that run"

Those should help. If that doesn't help, I would suggest transferring non-essential files to an external HD

Thanks for the suggestions!

I've already done those things though. I hardly ever have to stress about this because I've learned enough that I knew to do that, but...I'm drawing a blank now...

:/

Have you run disk defrag? That can clear out some room.

Also check and see what's in your startup folder, you might be running more programs than you want to. If you have the setup files for any program you don't use regularly, uninstall it and just hold onto the setup and you can reinstall as needed.

Um, what else? http://www.essortment.com/hobbies/easytipsimprov_szid.htm Sounds like you're making the best of it, but if it's an older computer, it's just not going to run as fast, and newer programs are going to be memory hogs on it.

I agree with the comments above. Defragging your comp is a VERY good idea. I can walk you through it if you need.

Also, the BEST thing to do would be to purchase an external hard drive. Toshiba has pretty good deals (comparing the size of the drive to how much you cost, they've been the only brand I've bought in the past), and they can go between PCs and Macs with little to no problems. Move any files you have on your computer that aren't needed (photos, music, etc) on to the external. That will clear up room no problem.

IAWTC External Hard drives were created by Zeus himself.

You can fix that. I am not at the computer with my Itunes, so I'm not going to use the exact right words, but there's a spot pretty easy to find from the menu items where you can set what file your new uploads go into. Change that from the default (which is always on C) to whatever file you have it on your external. :) Then it always uploads your music directly to your external drive!
