01x06 Man on the Street }{ Dollhouse Review

Obiwahn's review of 01x06 of Dollhouse

Dollhouse Season 1, Episode 6 Man on the Street

First of all, I was surprised with Mellie and Paul having dinner at his apartment. I was surprised somehow, to me it seemed to soon for us to be seeing Mellie and Paul together, comfortable, and somehow...closer? Also, them having sex in the middle of the show, I honestly didn't expect, and somehow it unsettled me. I guess I'm not looking for the cheesiness that was there 'Can I borrow a cup of sugar?' And he's still recovering from a gunshot wound? YEAH. Paul Ballard is not my favorite character, he makes weird faces, but I like that he's so persistent. He won't give up on the Dollhouse. I wonder what his attachment is to Caroline-now-Echo.

I thought the engagement with Echo and that guest star was cute. Seeing Dushku playing these different people is amusing to me. I like seeing how versatile she can be, how believable it can seem. When Ballard got into the house and they were in the kitchen, it was hysterical how she started accusing him of porn as his business. And then when Boyd is getting her out before Ballard gets to her, and she sees the bedroom with the flower petals and candles she points and goes "See?! PORN!" Made me laugh pretty hard. There were a lot of laughable moments in the show.

As for in the Chinese restaurant, Echo and Ballard meeting up once more- the message in the message? "There is a Dollhouse. There are many Dollhouses'." Was that part of the original message or did I just get lost, and there's actually someone on the inside that's telling him to watch himself, but to make it appear as if he's letting go of the idea?

I get lost easily, so explanations are GRAND.

As for Mellie being a sleeping!Active, or whatever that term was, I wasn't completely shocked. I almost expected it. And somehow, I'm drawn into Adelle's mind more and more as each episode is aired. Nothing is as it seems, so true to word. Where does she lie within all this?

I DON'T LIKE LAURENCE DOMINIC, HE'S SO FRIGGIN' MEAN! Why did he knock out Echo in True Believer when the building was burning down. Did he know that Boyd would reach her in time? What is his deal?! But, since I did this review because of [livejournal.com profile] obiwahn's review, does his attitude mean that he's trying to cover up an ulterior motive? Is he an inside person?

My favorite character is Dr. Claire Saunders. I just love her. I didn't follow Angel as much as I would have liked, but it waffled in the beginning and I was distracted by other things. So I never got to see Amy Acker in that show as ...Fred? Though I've glimpsed her in different things, I never had the time to really watch her or become a fan. I think she's absolutely adorable and the best episode was with Topher and her watching the videos to discover Viktor's reaction to Sierra. The fact that she was so nonplussed with Viktor having an erection, and the fact that she was so accommodating to Topher and obligingly calling it a man-reaction for his own comfort. There were some terribly glib moments there that I loved how those lines were executed and presented to viewers. I giggled a lot on that one, and I loved Sierra's reaction to Boyd throwing her Handler through the glass wall. Boyd is made of win, and Sierra's comment, "That wasn't quiet" made me laugh really, really hard.

I liked this episode, but compared to others - I would say that there was a bit of bump in this one that I didn't feel quite as much as say in the last 2 episodes. Of course my favorites include the one with tons of flashbacks, the story of Alpha, Boyd and Claire looking at that one body and Boyd exclaiming it looked like an act by Alpha - and Claire's reaction to that. I feel sorry for Claire, not for her injuries, but by the fact that she's being kept from the truth, what with security clearances and such...Topher knows Alpha is still out there, but Claire has been led to believe that he was shot in the head! For one thing, I don't know how Claire would be able to live if she knew Alpha was still alive, but alternately, she should know since she survived ONE attack, who knows if Alpha would go back and find her again?

I liked the episode overall, but not the best I've seen. And I have no idea why I don't like Tahmoh in this show...I've never seen him in other shows before. It's been a long time since I've invested any time in a TV show. Too much school and work. But...Tahmoh just throws me off somehow. Those faces are just ODD! But I don't hate on Penikett fans. I could see why others would swoon for him. He has really nice arms, and a great body - but I don't know if I like his attitude, or his way of portraying Paul Ballard. Maybe he'll grow on me after awhile. There has to be a reason for everything here, right?!

Tahmoh does make weird faces, haha. He looks a bit lizard-like to me. Not my type at all, face-wise, though he does have an amazing torso ;-)

I also love Amy in this role. I actually wasn't a fan of Fred in Angel. But I think that has more to do with the character than Amy...Amy played another role later on in the same show (I don't know if I should reveal anything further, in case you decide to watch) but I absolutely loved her then. I think the thing about Fred that annoyed me is the whole "grown woman acting like a child" thing. I didn't find it cutesy...just grating. Plus she was kind of uppity and judgmental at times.

However, I love Claire Saunders. She is such an interesting character, and Amy is doing a fantastic job at portraying the different layers that you just know are there. I particularly liked how protective she was of Victor in this episode, not believing for one second really that he was the one who raped Sierra.

I'm surprised that you liked the other episodes more than this one. I absolutely loved this episode. I also really liked The Target and True Believer. Stage Fright I could seriously have done without, except for all the nice Echo/Sierra bonding ;-)

YES! LIZARD-LIKE! It's...got something to do with his small lips and his nose, the way it's slanted and gets wider with his nostrils - holy cow you just took the words out of my mouth! hahaha, but...yeah, I don't like Sierra so much. I don't think she's very attractive at all, but I think I understand why her character is there. I love Viktor. He's adorable. So sweet! Claire Saunders is wonderful. I don't want to even imagine someone else playing her, Amy Ackers does it for me. I love any scenes she's in. haha - we'll see about Angel. It lasted for a while, right? Nearly 8 seasons? That's good. That's a healthy life right there.
